Description
A straight-on view of the Hanalei Pier in Hanalei Bay on Kauai in Hawaii. The blue water sparkles and the green hills come alive in the morning.
The Hanalei Pier, located on the north shore of Kauai, Hawaii, was built in 1892. However, the wooden deck was unsuitable, required constant maintenance, and did not last in our tropical climate. The concrete deck replaced the wood in 1922.
The Pier was originally used in shipping until1933. After that, two movies, Beachhead and South Pacific use this area as their primary filming locations. Adjacent to this pier area is a park called Black Pot Beach, which is favored by islanders and tourists alike.
It's common among locals to jump or dive off the pier end into the crystal clear water and either swim to shore or use the ladder to climb back onto the pier and jump again. I have done such a jump, with a friend photographing me seemingly hanging in the air out over the water. What a thrill!
The artist, Mary Deal, is also an award-winning author of mystery/thrillers, a short story collection and writers' reference books. Read about it here:

Interesting composition! The pier draws your eye into the parallel shore lines and the triangles in the roof and picnic table mirror the mountain shapes. Nice framing with the overhanging branches. Well done! v
