Description
Before paper boxes and satin bows reached Hawaii, gift boxes were made with strands of woven lauhala or coconut leaves. As with this box, decorated with red and green crepe paper, other decorations could include rafia, sea shells, flowers, even tiny figurines of an animal popular in Hawaiian culture.
These boxes remain popular today and are available in just about any size and shape. The makers get very creative with these boxes and decorating is embellished by anyone wishing to add to the decor and for any holidays.
Hau`oli La Hanau translates in English to Happy Birthday.
