Description
Heliconia plants and their flowers are now grown like other tropical flowers and exotic plants, specifically as garden plants and can grow from 3 to 30 feet tall. Some have upright facing flowers, while others grow downward. The latter is widely known as hanging heliconia. The name of this type and color pictured here is Heliconeaseae.
The Heliconia is known as the false Bird of Paradise, and is a native to the north western region of South America. Like the tropical Bird of Paradise we’re used to seeing, and some other types of Heliconia, these flowers open upward, yet the flowers are hidden inside the red pod-looking bracts. This allows only certain birds to access the pollen.
