Description
After passing through Princeville of the island of Kauai in Hawaii, the road drops steeply down into the valley. This is where you find the historic Hanalei Bridge, gateway to Hanalei and the rugged North Shore and Na Pali coastline. It will be difficult to find a cleaner picture of the bridge and taro fields brightened by the early morning sun.
Manufactured in New York City by Hamilton & Chambers, the Carnegie Steel truss pieces were built for the then Territory of Hawaii as a replacement to the existing bridge built in 1895. Upon arrival on Kauai, the bridge was assembled on-site over the Hanalei River.
Prior to the Hanalei Bridge and the other bridges in Hanalei and Haena, hand-pulled wood ferries were used to cross the rivers at various points along the valley floor. Not as easy nor as sturdy as a bridge crossing, canoes were often considered the safer way to cross the rivers.
