Description
This shot of the Lantern Floating Ceremony was taken after dark. The bay was aglow with thousands of lanterns. This is a Memorial Day celebration at Magic Island in Ala Moana Beach Park.
A Japanese tradition, the first Lantern Floating Hawaii ceremony on Memorial Day was held in 1999 at Ke`ehi Lagoon a bit northwest of Magic Island where it is presently held to accommodate greater numbers of attendees. It has grown each year in response to community demand. Thoughts and prayers from around the globe are set afloat to create a moment of collective remembrance, harmony and international friendship.
