Description
Some Hawaiian musical instruments against a backdrop of Tapa cloth and lauhala.
The large gourd with the beautiful white ruffled ribbon lei is known as an ipu heke. It's about 20 inches tall and makes a deep thumping sound when slapped or banged on the floor or other surface. Ipu instruments are used to achieve a drumbeat when playing music. A small ipu sits nearby.
Also included is my favorite ukulele, my little red uke. Images of these instruments are also shown separately in my Hawaii and Pacific Rim Culture gallery.
The words Mele Kalikimaka translates in English to Merry Christmas.
The artist, Mary Deal, is also an award-winning author of mystery/thrillers, a short story collection and writers' reference books. Read about it here:
