Description

This oil painting is of Moon Jelly Fish, or jellies, that I did with a spur-of-the-moment idea. I had prepared the canvas with the background for another picture, but decided not to go ahead. So it was perfect for painting these.

A group of Jelly fish is called either a bloom or a swarm. A bloom gathers in large groups in one place. A swarm applies to jellies that actively make an effort to stay together as a group. The moon jelly fish grouping is a swarm.

While vacationing on the island of St. John in 1968, I and a friend snorkeled a quarter mile out of one cove and through another where our ketch was anchored. Others took to the hiking trail but we wanted to swim. We passed through a bloom of jelly fish almost the length of the distant from our starting point to the boat. The water was thick with tiny 2 inch diameter jellies so that we touched many with each stroke while swimming. They even came up against our face masks. We made it to the boat feeling invigorated. Once there, the captain asked if we knew what we had just done. Of course, we had no idea. Then he told us we had swum through a bloom of jelly fish that were the stinging kind. We were lucky we didn't meet up with an adults in the group. We'd never have made it to the boat.
