Description

The footbridge on the property known as the Spalding Estate. Spalding House, also known as the Cooke-Spalding House, is also known as Nuumealani. The Hawaiian name translates to Heavenly Terrace. Anna Rice Cooke gave it that name and commissioned it. The house, together with its gardens and art museum, covers three and one half acres in Makiki Heights, Honolulu, Hawaii.

This property was recently put up for sale. I am happy that I had taken a couple tours there and have some stunning images. This property contained the gardens and footpaths of ancient Hawaiians. They have been kept the same as they always were when in use. The property boasts rare trees, plants and flowers. The art museum changed motifs and displays constantly. It was such a fantastic tour both times. More of my images will son grace this collection.

Many others have labored to keep this property maintained. From 1928 to 1941, the Rev. K. H. Inagaki landscaped the gardens, incorporating the design related Zen principle of shizen, which is naturalness and absence of artificiality. Inagaki carefully selected the rocks and their placement to emphasize the property’s steep natural terrain, transforming a barren ravine into a classical Japanese garden stroll. Local landscape architect Leland Miyano updated the garden in the late 1990s, making it less formal and planting it with native and non invasive alien flora. In 2000, his work earning the gardens the prestigious American Society of Landscape Architects Millennium Medallion for garden preservation.

Spalding House itself was maintained and operated by the Honolulu Museum of Art. They offer ever changing exhibits, a restaurant with the most amazing coffee, deserts and simple meals, in addition to art around the grounds and the views! What views! You can look out over the top of Honolulu to Diamond Head and to the Ocean.
