Artist's Description
The Great Pyrenees is also known as the Pyrenean Mountain Dog. The French know the breed as Patou, which means shepherd dog in French. Another common or shortened name is simply Pyrs. These dogs were originally sheep herders in the Pyrenees Mountains in Spain and France. More recently, they have been accepted as loving pets. They can grow to almost three feet long and weight up to 100 pounds, sometimes more. The thick ruff or mane is more pronounced on the male of the species.
