Description
This is a female of the species. The Black Witch Moth is also known as the Bat Moth because it resembles a bat and sometimes acts like a bat. Black Witch Moths are the largest moths in the U.S. with a bat-like wing spread. They are harmless, but have much in common with bats. Both are creatures of the night. Both can transform themselves (metamorphosis). Both fly. Both have long noses.
I found this one under the eaves of a shed. They rest in eaves and crannies during day time. I happened to walk by and, out of the corner of my eye, caught something hanging on the screen. Yes, I thought it was a bat! When I dared creep closer and saw those beautiful markings, my fear dissolved and up in front of my face went my camera. However, even if it was a bat, I'd have captured that image without fail.

Absolutely wonderful markings on this moth, and a very unusual wing shape too. This must be phenomenal seen live, Mary, if it's as large as a bat! Persian carpet designers take note! F&V for PIF in Self Taught.

It was that large, Richard. That's why I first thought it was a bat. But a closer look and those markings stopped me in my tracks.
