Description
Carousel Horse No 11 in my collection. From the County Fair in Lihue on Kauai, Hawaii.
The earliest known depiction of a carousel was in a Byzantine bas-relief dating around 500 A.D., so carousels have been around for a long time. The earliest ones offered baskets to ride in.
More recently, carousels offered horses and ponies. In still more recent times, other animals were added, much to the delight of those who favored certain animals.
Carousels are almost always found at carnivals and fairs where people expect to enjoy something different in their celebrations. In earlier times, it was fashionable for a lady to be seen riding a carousel. Carousels are mostly ridden by children these days, with a few exceptions of the adults who accompany their children.
The artist, Mary Deal, is also an Amazon bestselling, award-winning author of mystery/thrillers, a short story collection and writers' reference books. Read about it here:
