Description
A Hawaii Christmas is celebrated with music and dance and the traditional luau. The celebrations could be lavish, especially for tourists. But even when local people celebrate with family, the party rocks.
The words, Mele Kalikimaka - Hau`oli Makahiki Hou translates in English to Marry Christmas, Happy New Year.
Pictured against a backdrop of tapa fabric are some Hawaiian musical instruments: A large Ipu Heka with red ribbon lei, the gourd slapped or thumped on the floor to make a drum sound.. A red feather Uli Uli which rattles when shaken. A small Ipu with a painted Kukui Nut lei. A white ribbon lei.
Flower leis are popular in all of Hawaii but since people have gotten creative making ribbon leis they, too, are popular because they last and can be used for various holidays, even passed on to others.
