Description
Two of my ipu with a purple orchid lei. Ipu are made from hollowed out gourds. They are slapped and pounded on a surface to make drumming sounds. They are used in Hawaiian culture when chanting, dance groups, mele chanting, just about any type of Hawaiian music. You will not find too much Hawaii music without the use of the ipu. Sometimes the gourds contain small rocks or pebbles to make the rattle. Then the tops are closed and decorated with feathers.
I have found that the way the ipu is made can vary between the Hawaiian Islands: Oahu, Kauai, Maui, Big Island, Molokai. The structure is the same but some decorate with different colored feathers, or rafia and other belt-like ties.
