Description
This lotus blossom makes a bold statement, happily honoring the wind and sun with its distinct pink white and yellow tints among the green.
The earliest records of lotus flowers come from the Orient, namely Malaysia, New Guinea, Viet Nam, China, India and also Australia and Iran. Lotuses have been used in sacred art with the earliest records going back thousands of years. The Hindu and Buddhist cultures use the lotus as a symbol of spiritual awakening.
Like many plants that we in America do not associate with food, the seeds and roots are still used in food preparation in the East. In ancient times, even the pods and leaves were consumed.
I took a tour of Allerton Garden here on Kauai and never expected to see a large pond of lotus flowers in bloom. But why not? Allerton Garden's purpose is to keep alive some of Hawaii's most endangered plants. They decorate their beautiful grounds with all flowers, trees and shrubs found through The Hawaiian Islands. Some are indigenous only to Kauai. Of course, I will be going back soon for more photo images.
