Description
A German Christmas Sentinel, one of two, standing guard in the lobby in the hotel where I sometimes stay. It's quite a tall statue or German figurine fashioned like a nutcracker.
As early as the 1700s, craftspeople in northern Italy, Austria and Switzerland hancrafter wooden nutcrackers made to look like humans and animals.
Today’s nutcrackers look like soldiers or kings. That tradition began in the 1800s in Germany. Those nutcrackers were capable of breaking open various nuts in their mouths.
Most of the nutcrackers we see today look like soldiers. These nutcrackers are highly collectible, especially the very old ones. When the Nutcracker ballet found popularity, many of the modern figurines were made to look like characters in that story.
