Description
The 360 degree view from Diamond Head is so far reaching, each view and photo offers it own spectacular sight. Looking at this view, Waikiki is farther to the right. There is a steep hike of climbing switchbacks to get to the entry that eventually leads to the top of Diamond Head At the top is an large WWII bunker. After the switchbacks, to get to the top and out onto the viewing area, - unobstructed views, by the way - you would walk through tunnels, climb a flight of stairs with 99 steps, climb a spiral staircase in near darkness. Then there is another flight of stairs with 69 steps. Eventually you get to the top and must climb out through the gun turret which leads to a walkway to the top. I have done this trek five times and would gladly do it again just to go up there and take a few more photos, not to mention, it's wonderful exercise.
But back to this photo. These hotels along the beach are where people wish to be by the ocean on the leeward side, but not right in noisy Waikiki with all it's crowds and expensive hotels. I found this view beautiful, speaking a different message about Honolulu. The neighborhood below has a unique flavor all it's own.
