Description
This is a typical rural farm house in Walnut Grove among the croplands of the Sacramento River Delta in California. The houses were different in town. Most rural houses were small, maybe two bedrooms, with a room or two added on as the family grew. Or maybe they made do or moved to bigger properties.
Oh yes, this is the house where I grew up! I lived there from about 8 years of age until seventeen. The house was built new for my dad who was foreman and ran four crop ranches owned by a conglomerate.
When I lived there, the house was white with green window shutters and surrounded by pear trees. There was no weeping willow or trash burning can in the front yard. We had a green picket fence. One of the laborers who worked for my dad was our gardener. We had varieties of beautiful roses, daisies, zinnias, and shrubs along the fence. Tea Roses climbed up the porch pillars and along the eaves. A monster Freestone Peach tree grew near the garages.
All that is changed now. The pear trees grew too old to fruit. At the time this image was captured, the underground watering system had just been installed in the cleared land. Cherry trees now stand where once pear blossoms filled the air with their scent. Time and change take their toll.
