My home town, Walnut Grove, California, is one of the oldest settlements along the Sacramento River. The town was an agricultural center and riverboat stop, and a major shipping port for farm produce and fish. Bartlett pears were another main crop and I lived in the middle of a pear orchard. Needless to say, I ate a lot of pears and still love them today.
As the farming towns modernized, many old homes have been abandoned and are left standing forlorn. They are still owned by someone, but no longer needed for living. Sometimes, these old symbols of lives past become historic places. Others, like this one, simply add a bit of historic ambiance to the fields and abandoned farms.
The Sacramento River Delta is made up of numerous islands and rivers. To get from island to island meant using a ferry. A few are still in use today. The town of Walnut Grove occupies both the east and west sides of the River. In 1916, the first bridge was build. It was a bascule bridge, a draw bridge. I have an image that that bridge in my Lower 48 Gallery.
