Description
Lumahai Beach on the north shore of Kauai in Hawaii is where scenes from the movie Bali Hai we filmed. This particular area is at the mouth of the Lumahai River. During low tide, you can walk out and climb onto the rocks for some fantastic scenic shots.
When you walk out onto the sand, you will also notice a green cast. That’s because water washes down Olivine or green glassy looking stones and sand. Olivine is made from volcanic action. The green cast over the sand is a fine layer of Olivine. However, large pockets of green sand can be found simply looking for dark pockets here and there and digging into them.
Larger pieces of Olivine, when found, are also used to make local jewelry. I have such jewelry and cherish it along with my memories of Kauai because Olivine is becoming scarce.
I have posted two images of this location, this one with very little of the rock wall showing. The other image has more of the rock wall. I have found that people prefer either or.
